Tell us about your Spartan story and what motivated you to do a Spartan race:

My Spartan Story is all about family……My husband and two sons and my new Ferguson Fitness Family. My three guys were already working out religiously. In the Fall, two of them finished their first Spartan Sprint in SC. Their motivation to complete more and push themselves inspired me to start my own journey. It’s a path I will not go down alone because I am surrounded by family. Also, being the mom of boys, I feel a need to go above and beyond to show them I am strong and can follow through with attaining goals I set. My decision to take on a Spartan Race couldn’t have come at a better time either. It was the healthy release I needed from the daily routine bogging my spirits down………it is quite liberating to take the daily stresses out on flipping tires and punching bags.

In your own words, how did Ferguson Fitness help you prepare for your Spartan race?

Ferguson Fitness is a haven for inspiration and motivation. January 1st, I committed to complete a Spartan Race and honestly thought I was not going to be able to follow through on my goal. I thought this because I am the oldest woman in the classes; I have pounds to shed; I’m not a runner; I could not do a single pull-up and honestly, could not see myself purposely sliding into a mud pit or two or three. Anthony Ferguson, my family and the Ferguson Fitness Team all believed in me, even when I didn’t. Encouraging through every exercise, I was told I was doing a great job even when it was only a 32 second plank hold or 5 ring pull-ups. It was more than I was doing before I got there……they were right! I was doing great and I was getting stronger and better. They were all pushing me to do my very best!

Describe what you did to prepare for your Spartan race:

Going to the SGX training classes definitely prepared me for the race. Pushing myself during every exercise and getting out of my comfort zone was a huge help in crossing the finish line. Burpees coupled with challenging mind and body exercising prepped me to get through my first race.

Talk about your experience in training with our Spartan Team and how that benefited your race preparation.

When you are surrounded with people who believe in you, cheer you on through their own sweat or turn around after completing their task to do an exercise all over again, just so you don’t finish alone; it will change you and change your way of thinking. Knowing you will not have to do this alone is a huge benefit during training and when it comes to race day.

What changes have you experienced in preparing for your Spartan race?

When I started in January, I could not complete a pull-up, thought monkey bars were for those in elementary school (because that is the last time I was on them) and 10 burpees was not something my body would let me do. Here I am 4 months later, the numbers on the scale have not moved but…….I can do unassisted pull-ups,flip huge tires by myself, make it across the monkey bars, turn around and come back, pull 150 lbs of tires AND……….I can do 200 burpees in one class period……yes 200!!! And I am going to keep going! This training has had a positive impact on the way I look at myself now.

Describe your Spartan race day experience:

Teamwork sprinkled with challenges, fun and mud…..a lot of mud!

What would you tell someone who is thinking about training for a Spartan race?

It doesn’t matter what your age is, what your athletic ability is, if you are in shape or out of shape……you can do a Spartan Race! Surrounding yourself with motivational people, like those at Ferguson Fitness, will get you to the Finish Line and it will have positive impacts in all aspects of your life.
