Tell us about your Spartan story and what motivated you to do a Spartan race:

I probably said about a thousand times, tomorrow I’ll quit smoking, start eating better and working out. A thousands days came and went and I was stuck in the same place. I may of tried a few workouts here and there, ate better some weeks but never really committed to it. I was so stuck in my unhealthy lifestyle and really lacked the motivation, confidence and strength to make any real changes. Most people assumed I was in good shape because I was thin. Little did most people know, I could barely run a 1/2 mile. Suffered from chronic neck, shoulder and back pain which left me sometimes unable to physically get out of bed without help. Then one day in December, I woke up and said, I’m gonna do a Spartan. This day wasn’t like the 1000 days before it, something changed in me and I was ready to start the hardest challenge of my life, changing my entire lifestyle.

In your own words, how did Ferguson Fitness help you prepare for your Spartan race?

There is no doubt in my mind, I would of not accomplished my first Spartan without Ferguson Fitness. Its very simple, this isn’t just a business or gym to the Ferguson’s. They care about every single person who walks through that door. When you sign up at Ferguson Fitness you aren’t just joining a gym. Your are getting unbelievable 100% support, motivation, nutritional advice, accountability groups in addition to tailored and challenging workouts. Anthony and Johanna are there every step of the way to help in any way they can.

Describe what you did to prepare for your Spartan race:

January 9th was my very first workout. I committed to going to SGX classes at least twice a week and even changed my work schedule to get there! In addition, I started eating better and incorporating Shakeology ( thanks for the advice Johanna!) into my diet. Now that Charlotte is finished, I plan on attending more classes including the endurance classes and tightening up my diet!

Talk about your experience in training with our Spartan Team and how that benefited your race preparation.

The members and owners of Ferguson Fitness are simply family. Walking in for the first time, I was terrified because it was apparent to me, I was the weakest person there. However, not one person made me feel that way. In fact, everyone encouraged me. They clapped, shouted words of encouragement and support. My teammates have been the people who have held me up when I wanted to stop. They are the ones who have empowered me and have given me the strength & courage to say to myself, keep pushing, I got this!

What changes have you experienced in preparing for your Spartan race?

I’ve seen tremendous changes physically and mentally. Last fall, I literally needed help getting out of bed because of a chronic neck injury. I’ve been battling it for 4 years now with exacerbations of neck pain along with numbness and tingling down my right arm. I was told right before my first SGX class, surgery was my only option. Well, I chose to see what benefits I may get from alternative options like working out. I have had NO neck pain, numbness or tingling. Actually, my neck and back haven’t felt this good in years! I’ve lost 15 lbs, am stronger than I ever have been and feel better at 36 than I did at 21! Mentally, I do not stress over things anymore! I’m happier in every aspect of my life because of working out!

Describe your Spartan race day experience:

Ahhh…one of the best days of my adult life. I’ll be honest, I was so nervous, I thought I might get sick. Luckily, that didn’t happen. We started all together, worked as a team and supported each other through the course. Every obstacle wasn’t so scary with literally a group of people cheering you on, helping where they could and getting right down with ya to do burpees, just to show support! There is no other group of people I would of wanted to share this experience with than my Ferg family.

What would you tell someone who is thinking about training for a Spartan race?

Stop thinking about it and do it! The first step to change is the commitment to do it. Sign up for a race and start training. It is life changing and you basically get to be a kid again, swinging on monkey bars and getting dirty!
